In addition to what the others have said, a Currency field can store a much larger range of values than a Numeric of equivalent size: +/- 922337203685477.5807 (with 4 decimal accuracy), according to the Help file. So, allocate 8 bytes for a value and forget about ever overflowing!
Simply put, it's more space-efficient, just like DateTime compared to Date.
