Who said anything about a LAN application?
Either way, whether you use a Web Solution or DCOM you still centralize and
you still build n-tier apps. In fact, a smart design would allow to go
either way to allow direct connection to objects on the server as well
as allowing HTTP interfaces via XML/POST data etc.
