I know there is a setting somewhere in outlook to make it the default email client but couldn't find it.

If you are running IE5 start it, click Tools->Internet Options, click the Programs tab and change the E-mail combo to Outlook. I believe this is available in IE4 also but I don't remember the exact menu item.
