Area codes are not for locality, but more for region. Well, at least they used to be that way. We've had to add so many new area codes recently (explosion of cell phones, faxes, etc), that they just don't have the same meaning anymore. In some places you can make local calls between "area codes" and in other places it's a long distance call within the same "area code". Your best bet would be to ask, or check the phone book for the local exchanges from your location. The exchange is the 3 digits after the area code.
