The problem is, you've ask the equivalent of help me find a book on programming.
If you had ask just a few short years ago, the answer would have been, HTML and CGI. But with the explosion of the web I don't think there is one or even two or three books that will give you a good answer.

It all depends on what you want to do. Just like non-Internet programming.
HTML is very limiting so everyone started trying to find ways around its limits and depending on what limit they were trying to get around is what they used.

CGI is a way of calling a program, but it tends to be slow, compared to some of the other, newer ways.

Visual Studio gives you lots of ways of using the different MS tools to do non-internet and web programming. It's problems, IMHO is that to use all the neat drag and drop stuff at design time, you have to limit the client to IE browser. You can hand code java around those problems but the other problem is that VS has MS level help. (sucks) You have to do a lot of reading between the lines and, at least I've had to do a lot of, let me try this, nope that’s not it, try it this way, before I got any results.

Front Page lets you do a lot of neat, quick and easy stuff, but it sucks when you want to do something out side the Wizards. (Talk to ROX about that).

I would HIGHLY recommend Rick's book. While it has a Fox slant it by no means is limited too fox stuff. It give a well rounded look at what a pain web stuff is.

I said all that just to make this point. I don't think you will find one book or language for web stuff that will do everything you want, with the performance that your users will require. I think you will find, as we have here, a need for a mixed bag of stuff. The newest stuff is better to use, but it's still like trying to thread a needle with mittens on your hands.

Welcome to the DARK SIDE.

Jeff

>>>I'm looking for information on internet programming in general. Something that does an overview of all the different technologies. There's plenty of information on each of the technologies, but I haven't found anything that covers them all and shows where they each fit in.

>Actually, it was Yahoo that started me looking for a basic book. I decided I wanted to learn "Internet Programming". So I went to Yahoo looking for information and got overwhelmed. There's so many websites that I don't know where to start. I want to know things like "What's the difference between CGI and active server pages?" "What the heck is 'COM'?" "What's XML?" "How do all these different technologies fit together? Do you use them all in one site, or are they different ways of doing the same thing? Are any passee? Do they work with all browsers?"

>See, basic, pull it all together stuff, rather than instruction on how to use each individual technology.
