Try inserting a "\" after the drive name: File("A:\Refpeo.DBF")

>I need to check for a file on a floppy drive specified by the user. A file with the same name exists on the users network or local hard drive, in the default path. When I use file('a:refpeo.dbf') it always returns true, apparently continuing to search the path if the file is not found on the floppy. Any other ideas for a file existence test? (This is all in VFP 6.0)
