Then I wouldn't call them a child, probably, at least not to their face :)
But if they want to major in CIS: BASIC first, if they're still complete newbies after high school. HTML first semester too, for sure. Then either C or Pascal, something highly structured. Pascal is a better first-language, from my experience, though C++ is a *must* soon after. Early, the concepts are more important than the exact language. Something visual later, probably VB (all right, so shoot me :) After that, something OOP (vfp is fine then). A DB course like Access early. Later, a C/S course for sure. A course in network/server technology...
