You should look over the entries in the FAQ under
Win32 and Other APIs; there are a number of downlaodable files here that use the various Win32 API functions in the files section; I'd recommend looking at Christof Lange's STRUCT class which provides a means of defining and using structures in a straightforward fashion with VFP, my own CLSHEAP, which provides an all-VFP solution to heap management (also useful for dealing with structures) and anything else there that covers various APIs that you're interested in.
The FAQ has a couple of general guideline articles compiled by george Tasker about the API, and there have been threads over the past two weeks where people have recommended some source books (not specifically for VFP) related to Win32 and using the APIs.
