There are lots of calculations that can't be done algebraically. Square root is one of them. The one that I had to work on was True Interest Cost (TIC) for municipal bonds. The answer has to be guessed. Even highly advanced computers and dedicated calculators arrive at the answer from a series of guesses.

Basically, take a problem like SQRT, that you can't solve on paper, and that is a candidate for an algorithm like this. I am sure Bruce can give you the official name for these types of problems.
