Can this be due to a lot of deleted records at the begining of the table? As we know VFP (and FP for that matter) caches a number of records when opening the table. I could imagine that if SET DELETE = ON VFP doesn't count the deleted records and has to download additonal records. This might be a sitiation where the deleted tag is handy.

Also did you open the table shared or Exclusivly ? VFP downloads more reads if you open the table exclusive. Did you open the table with or without setting an index order (For example: USE Table ORDER Tag) ?
