UNICODE is a standard that allows for 65K characters (not only 256 as it is for ASCII). Each char is coded on 16 bit and, practically, any possible char in any language has a unique UNICODE code.
See the "How to convert to Unicode?" FAQ (by Michel Fournier) in the FAQ section, #177.
