I think you can do what you want... however, there is no NEED to run it as a service.

Here are a few articles you might want to look at...

I know the titles don't sound like what you want.... but the are both related to setting up remote processing for your ap. The second has a whole section of COM/DCOM.

Then March 1999 FoxTalk... "Remote OLE Autmatino in the Real World", this is a combination Case Study/HowTo which describes pretty much what you want to do... off load a large process to a high power server that everyone shares.
