You might want to check out uplink speeds. AFAIK, DSL has become shorthand for ADSL - the "A" meaning "asymmetric". You might find you get 1M+ downlink speed but only a small fraction of that as uplink speed. I hear rumours (about @Home, to which I subscribe) that even cable access uplink speed might be limited in the future (if it isn't already) to 128K - not bad, but nothing like downlink speed.
