After reading your article I went looking for SQLNet. When I couldn't find it, I releaized it wasn't part of version 8. So, I loaded Net80, the only thing in the intall package that talked about client software. I then searched for Tnsnames. When I found it, I deleted it's contents and put in something modeled after the file from your article. Now I can create an ODBC DSN, but can't get connected. I'm using a modem to connect to the server. I was able to ping the server, so I should be able to make a connection, right?
