Two techniques (besides encryption) used here are:

1) Use the '$' in the dir sharename to hide it from prowling users. Not foolproof, but the average user will have trouble.
2) Divide your data up into different dirs and restrict access to only certain users/certain dirs.

#2 is the best solution, if/when possible.

Note that encryption doesn't stop drastic actions like sabotaging the data...
