With a captive audience, us, Microsoft is interested in one thing. $$$$$
Let the users test the product, and Microsoft will issue patches to patches. About two years ago, Microsoft had a letter stating it wanted to reduce the "normal" 18 month development/release cycle of key products, to 12 months. That could only mean more product ($), and more problems. It is a fine thing to make a profit, so you can stay in business, but a stable product has much to be said for it.

Perhaps it is a bit like products that work well, and last for years. Companies that make reliable products have been known to go out of business. Who needs a new one, if the old one is great?

This Option pack, etc routine might be Microsofts way to let us know "it cares". If they did it right the first time, we would not be buying additional products.
