That's the nice thing about this business, we can "differ" and all make a living! As I said earlier, I did the network admin thing for five years and I learned a ton of good things. But ultimately I decided that fighting with hardware wasn't where my deepest interests are. Call me strange but personally I think hardware should simply work... plug it in and it works... but alas I dream! Of course, I should say I feel the same way about OSes... but again, I dream. And I agree with you John H. (there's too many Johns around here, even in this thread alone!) that you shouldn't have tunnel vision and not learn the important technologies of the day, i.e. web stuff, I said I prefer database development, which includes web stuff today. I simply prefer to take on more work, but not do it all... and yet earn money because it is getting done. Sounds almost illegal doesn't it! Anyway, my partners and sub-contractors don't seem to mind! I can focus on my interests (by the way my latest non-database thing is Linux, Apache, and Perl... yikes, can I say those AntiM$ words here! :), so I certainly have interests elsewhere) and we get more work done and more people make money... works for me.

>I somewhat differ. I like doing different things. Doing nothing but coding bores me, so I build computers, run cable, setup and administer networks, etc.
>I really don't see how you can concentrate on only one facet anymore. If you're not learning how to "do" web stuff, you're dying. Doing web stuff means knowing the server (NT in my corner.) Knowing NT means IIS, Proxy, Exchange, yada yada yada. It's the chinese curse . . . "may you live in interesting times!" Who can focus on anything for very long, but then again, who wants to.< G >

The best thing about having my own business is that
I get to choose which 20 hours a day I get to work!
