Here is one way to do it.

First make a combo that displays the display the desc but is binds the code to the field. If the desc is column 1 of the combo, give it a width, but give the code 0 width. Bind column 2 (the code) to the field.

Second put this combo into the grid then set SPARSE=.F. for the row. Viola.
