While Evan's solution will work, personally, I think that setting sparse to false makes the grid look cluttered and busy. What I generally do is create a local view of the grid's recordSource that includes both the description and the code and use that as the grid's recordSource. Then I bind the grid column to the description, and in the combo's valid, update the code from the combo's valid.

It's a little more work, but I think it looks more professional if the combo only appears in the column when that cell has focus.
