Hi,

It's preventative maintenance and performance.

In addition to the weekly dropping and rebuilding of indexes, there is another batch file that "update statistics" on every table.

I'm using "Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 DBA, Survival Guide" by Spenik and Sledge as a source for avoiding problems with SQL Server. In it they discuss the value of these techniques and many other issues. Have a look at this book. There might be an update for SQL 7.0.
