If some of the controls (for example, the Calendar control) don't generate the error, but other do (like the Common Dialogs), then I think you're missing the License in the registry. There's a FAQ under Third Party ActiveX which describes it. Do a Find under the Edit menu in the Register Editor for Licenses. Look for one that begins DB4C0... If it isn't there that's the problem and you'll have to get the License from Microsoft tech support.

The FAQ suggests a lot of fixes that didn't work for me. The only way to fix this error is to get the registry codes from MS. I spent 2 1/2 hours on the phone with a tech who didn't believe that it had to be done manually, while he took me through every test and procedure under the moon. I finally called back later, talked to another tech who was familiar with the problem, and had it solved in about ten minutes. Don't let them charge you, either. BTW, my problem was caused by the Office 97 installation, not an uninstall of any sort.
