To give you more details, the following worked for me for similar problems:

Before distributing my application I run a little program that open every reports, clears EXPR, TAG, TAG2 and replaces EXPR with "orientation=0" or "orientation=1" for landscape ones. This clears the printer driver definition (actually mine on developer machine) that is saved with the report designer. That kinda force to use the default driver on user`s machine instead of the driver that was save at design time.

I think that it should work on a portable even if a printer is not connected as far as the portable has a printer driver installed.
