"Write it in VFP, add in some Java applets to handle forms &c, then just dump it onto my friendly neighborhood ISP's server? "
Well I'm afraid its now quite that simple. You need to decide what type of Web Server you are going to run on first. That my limit you options on what to write the code in. If you have your own server, or plan on making a lot of money off this site, then you could use Rick's West Wind, Fox based Web. It's a really good package and geared toward the Fox Developer. It is not exspensive but to get someone to host it is. The numbers I've seen are around 300 a month. There may be cheaper one now, I have not checked in a while. Not a problem if you have your own server. It's well worth a good look.
If you are going to have an NT IIS provider, you have a few more options. Active Server Pages, Drumbeat, Cold Fusion, just to name a few. But none of these option will allow you to just write it in fox and put it on the web.
Good luck and welcome to the Darkages.
