I'll respectfully disagree with the others. I think the way to decide what resolution to use is to do the amrket research. Find out what percentage of users are at each of the resolutions in the market your product is intended for and then decide how large a market you want to sell to. For example (these are made up number to demonstrate what I mean); assume that we want to sell to a market of computer game players. OUr research finds out that;

640 = 15%
800 = 50%
1024 = 20%
greater than 1024 = 15%

We decide that we want to hit 80% of our market, so we see that 800 will hit that 80%, actually 85%. The problem with going for the lower resolution in this scenario is that it may eliminate the higher end of the market.

This example is over simplified as the differing resolutions may also be involved in where the money is being spent on software. It is thoroughly possible that the 800+ resolution group is more likely to spend money on software than the 640 group is and that has to influence the decision.
