Hello Bruce;

In VB 6.0, create a new form. Highlight the object you wish to place on the form from the object tool bar, with your mouse cursor. Go to the form, and drag the darling object you want, inscribing a rectangle, to resemble the original object. It will appear on the form. Now that the object is on the form, you will notice it is difficult to position it where you want it. Unlike VFP, you cannot highlight the VB object, and use the arrow keys to "fine tune" the objects position. In fact, there are no tools to line up objects. You will cuss VB and love VFP more, after completing a project in VB. You can however, highlight the object, and drag it to a default grid matrix position, determined to be the one you want, by Bill Gates and his "boys".

One uses Visual Basic to put bread and butter on the table. The customer said VB, and the company I worked for gave me the project, the VFP developer. I had to learn VB 6.0, for a large contract. I did so, and do not recommend to anyone in their right mind, to use VB to handle data applications. It takes longer, and is very limited in what it can do. If you want an address book, well, maybe VB is OK, if you like to suffer. After completing my first VB project, the company gave me additional VB projects. That was my reward. I even got to clean up the mess that five programmers spend several years "creating".

It is easy for a VFP programmer to learn VB. Because of your exerience, you know what can be done, and how to resolve issues. With VB, you have to learn how to use the tools, syntex, and what can and cannot be done.

A positive note about Visual Basic: It is one step above Access.

I believe in using the correct tool for any job. VB and data do not mix.

Tom
