Well, it was suggested by one or two people that it could be network/server software responsible for it, in that case it could include SHARED. The idea was that a server would check to see if a file was in use, and if not maximize performance by loading it to the local if it could.

I don't find that theory too convincing, since it could create a big problem if anyone else opened up the file. I don't think the server's smart enough to pull the local file copy back in to update it before allowing another user in, but I'm no expert on this...
