My experience, here in Toronto, is that almost nobody speaks French. Very few can read or understand French.
But the best experience was when I traveled by train from Toronto to Montreal. Leaving Toronto almost everybody was speaking English. As the time was passing and we were approaching Montreal, more and more people started to speak in French, so, when we arrived you could think that everybody is French. :)
This makes me think that many Canadians just pretend that they don't speak French. But I have no idea why would they do it!
