One other possibility would be to let him sit at your computer to take a look at it.
Another would be to do a contest with him. The one who build a simple application the fastest and run the fastest win. Make sure you use a framework and a database with more than 100K records. Since there is no framework in VB (because it doesn't support inheritence) and Access will choke with many records, you will have no problem beating him if he choose VB. If he coose Delphi, there are possibility some framework for it but you will still beat him in data access speed.
