This is possible. If you go out and buy a cable, make sure to ask for a NIC to NIC cable (Network Interface Card), Cat 5 preferably.

If you're to make your own, make one end Cat.5 and on the other, make the following crossovers:

Cable - Opposing End
1 - 3
2 - 6
3 - 1
6 - 2

That's for the hardware. Then you have to setup your Windows appropriately. Btw, if you want to go with 3 or more PCs, then you will need a hub, since 2 NICs per PC is not recommended, plus it's not all that reliable. Around here, we can get cheap, but decent hubs for around 100$ Canadian (even cheaper if you're willing to compromise).
