Bruce,
I was repeating the phrase, weakly typed, without knowing if the term was precise. You are probably right--variables are untyped--nothing weak about it. Perhaps I had heard that VFP is weakly typed meaning some things are untyped and others are typed: native properties, system variables, and fields come to mind.
I prefer to DECLARE arrays at the start, and use the DIMENSION command exclusively for resizing. I think DECLARE has been around as long or longer than DIMENSION.

>Hi Charlie - I thought vfp was referred to as "untyped." Weakly typed, or so I recall, was a language like Fortran (I think) where typing was optional. BTW, I had never heard of DECLAREing an array before, but I see it's quite valid. Is that a legacy from dbase or something?
