My thoughts on what I have heard / seen on the conferences:

I believe you are correct that the 2 devcons are going to be fairly similar. However, the one in New Orleans is at the same time as a SQL Server conference and you will be allowed to attend their sessions if you so desire.

I attended this years So Cal. I never had a problem finding a seat in any session and it was easy to approach speakers on questions I had.

From everyone I spoke too, there are approx. 3 times as many attendees at Devcon as at So Cal. It is not as easy to find a seat at the popular topics. And because of the size of the group it is not as easy to get 1 on 1's with people either.

Also, for those on a budget, So Cal is pretty much the same as Devcon, at 1/3 the price.
