This one was bugging me so I went to the web:
SNOBOL (StriNg Oriented symBOlic Language) is an
unconventional programming language based on logical principles
of pattern matching to solve string manipulation problems. It
contains an unusually powerful collection of string processing
and pattern-matching functions but has had only limited impact on
the mainstream of programming language development. Historical Background:
A research team at Bell Telephone Laboratories (BTL)
developed SNOBOL in 1962 as an aid to their own applications in
symbolic formula manipulation. An improved and expanded version
called SNOBOL3 appeared in 1966 and a language with more general-
purpose utility, SNOBOL4, followed in 1969. Substantial
development of SNOBOL itself has not occurred since SNOBOL4,
except for the continual implementation of the language on
contemporary hardware. Even though it has been widely used in
programming research, the language has never been standardized.
I liked SNOBOL a lot in graduate school. Once you get the hang of munching your way through strings its makes lots of sense.
