While I use ComTools, (order from Hallogram), the most common problem I have had with receiving garbage characters is one of the following settings:

28800 baud, no parity, 8 data, and 1 stop bit

We have some computers that we must just experiment with to get the correct settings. Sometimes the parity setting will be different from computer to computer.
