I'm a bit confused. Are you sure that RENDORIND is a character field. If so, were the values in it before the SELECT '0000000000'. My guess is that in some way you are changing the field type from numeric (where the value was zero) to character where the value is spaces (empty). If you listed the tables structure(s) and SQL code it would help.
