Right, the init() is a good place to pass an object to a form. Don't forget you can pass forms to methods/functions, too. :-)
Search the files and messages sections here for "outstanding object reference." You should find a wealth of information of when and how they can be left. It's not really something to be anxious about...it is just something to be aware of. VFP does ALOT of housecleaning for us, but there's some extra work that *might* be needed. But, you'll know, because the effect of an outstanding object reference is that when you close a form (release it), you'll see the form's "X" is disabled, but the form doesn't actually go away.

No, I'm being quite literal when I say you have to assign .NULL. to the object reference.
