Hello Jim,

Before we go further let me make it clear that I did'nt make the law. So I am not responsible for its effects. Please don't be angry at me I'm only trying to understand the point of view of english speakers that are upset by this law.

>Hi Denis,
>
>You are convinced that IF there was no law including letter sizing then the French would be very small.

Yes because the proof is that before those laws many places did'nt have any french to advertise their businesses.

>Clearly, that situation, should it ever happen, would bother you immensely though.

Yes it would bother me as it would bother you if the same happened in Toronto. By the way I am sure that there a not many places with bilingual signs in toronto :) but that is another long thread that we could start after this one is finished. (if it ever comes to an end :) )

>So, why is it that you cannot see that it bothers the people who it is aimed at???? In this case it IS the law!!!!

I can see that it bothers many persons. What I can't understand is why ?
The english is still there only smaller than french ? I can't believe that just the size could upset you that much.

>As I understand your other commentary, you would live with it because we all have to live with the good and bad laws controlling our lives. But given your first position, I really have to wonder IF you actually would live with it IF the law was the other way around.

I would be able to live in english for the rest of my life in a heartbeat. So far there are many places where english is my primary language (Television, Music, readings related to computers, internet, VFP) but as long as it will be possible I will continue to live primarily in french.

>Yes, we have to live with laws, good or bad. But how do you think laws ever get changed/improved if people just accept them and keep quiet about them????
>
>When a law goes too far it can be STUPI and, in this case, it makes that grade handsomely!

Laws are made to be changed. When those are not changed it could be that the arguments to change them are not good enough and/or that not enough citizens would like those laws to be changed.

An example of this is that there were many laws made in the beginning of the century that are not applied anymore. They are not going to waste time to modify those laws because anyway they are not applied anymore.

I will be more than happy to read your replies.
