We succeeded to change the directory at runtime (which was, in fact, one of the original needs for the hack), but only if TablesDBC was only one directory below ViewsDBC. If there were more subdirectories included or TablesDBC was situated in a totally different path, VFP couldn't open/find individual tables. Obviously the path information (or some other essential fact) is compiled also somewhere else and because that information remained unchanged, VFP couldn't work as we expected.

Thanks for telling about your findings Illkka. This is something I never did myself, so I can only guess what's happening.

I'm pretty sure Ed Leafe implementation was to have the views in a local DBC (I mean on a local drive) and the tables within another DBC on the server. The best place to find Ed is on the Codebook forum. You might want to sum up your experience and post a message there. (www.codebook.leafe.com). And once you get everything fixed, sum up your experience for the wiki.
