Since this is an application issue, the answer is, do whatever works, that you are comfortable with, and that can be understood by another programmer.

The code I offered you, taking into account your correct identification of the need to SELECT into a table, is one way to do it, and happens to be how I approached similar situations when I was doing Accounting software.
