>I have been searching the web in vain to find information on VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) Decoding. I know that VIN's are regulated by the government and I'm assuming that whoever regulates them has all the data and the specs for decoding the VIN. Does anyone know what agency regulates VIN's. Any other info about VIN decoding would be very helpful.

VIN's are not regulated by the gov, more they are manufacturer directed. Ford is different than GM in package information. Spaces 5 -> 9 give you the details you are looking for. 1->4 are usually the plant. 10 is the year, 11-14 is more details on body, engine, extras, 15->18 are the control #.

If you get the NADA system you get all that and more from their system.

www.nada.com

Their system is open so you can pass the vin to them and you will get back all the poop you wanted. It's not a closed system either, because their product is the current vehicle value you'll find that your clients should already have the program.

I am going to update my dos based system to VFP sooner or probably later. I've decided to work with them in getting all the good crud out of the VIN.

Are you doing a leasing, new car or used car app?

I'm in the used, and title loan arenas today.
