I *think* you are talking about completely normal design-time behavior. Usually it's less noticeable, since most of the time shapes are used transparently.
The only workaround that comes to mind is to keep the shapes transparent while you're editing, and then before final build make them opaque. You could even set them to opaque at runtime, if you wanted...
