That's too bad. What do you use as RecordSourceType? 0 (table) or 1 (alias). Maybe trying the other one you might have more luck.

And have you thought of creating an empty copy of your dbf (a cursor), and tie-ing this one to your grid, and then resetting the record source to the table.

Finally, or first of all you could use a horse remedy (as we say in french): closing and reopening the file.

But even in the Hacker's Guide they say that creating a view is the better choice here. But I understand you cannot do this with free tables. Catch 22.
