Other advice (likely hard to follow, though): resist politics. Few people know about this, but several years ago, one member of our community suggested to a small group of folks that we should honor someone who contributed a lot to all of us (names are withheld here for obvious reasons!). Even in this small group (about 50), there was so much "how come him and not me or someone else" BS that eventually, the originator was so disgusted that he dropped the idea.
