While checking out various scenarios, look at Rick Strahl's FREE xxXML utility at www.west-wind.com. I haven't used it yet, but he says it's quite fast, and it has lots of conversion capabilities for passing data from one layer to another.

Surely your boss has also read that XML is the data-transfer mechanism of the future?
