I have had clients complain about how slow our system is (VFP/SQL Server) and it always points to the network. The best way is to use TCP/IP protocol.
Thinking back when I was creating reports I realize now that I could have the database team create views for me to handle the normalized data. You know what they say about hind site... 8-)
