Amanda,

To me this is a highly personal thing.

I have been through 6 languages, never more than 2 at the "same" time (working in old while learning the new), became highly proficient in 5 of them (still not there with VFP), and can no longer claim proficiency in the first 4. I know this because the third of these, and the one I felt most "expert" with, has been a small struggle in a my current project.

I think that being "expert" at a language is far more useful/satisfying than being OK at two or three. I also infer from your question that you too feel that there are not really that many people who can truly become "expert" in more than one language simultaneously.

While there is clearly one person here on UT who can not only do that, but be expert in Lawyering and BusinessManagement and just about anything else you can name, he is truly a very unique individual.

An "expert" can make his/her 'instrument' sing while an average programmer really only get noise by comparison. An expert accomplishes work quickly but thoroughly accurately/professionally.

Cheers,

Jim N
