Ed,
Thanks for the additional info.
Isn't the second part of the tip mainly about protecting your machine from access by outsiders while you are connected to the internet?

>>Does your Dial-Up Networking connection take a long time to actually connect to your ISP? If so, you probably have an unnecessary option called "Log on to Network" selected in your Dial-Up Networking connection. To see if this is the case, right-click on your Dial-Up Networking connection and select the Properties command from the shortcut menu. Then, select the Server Types tab. Now make sure that the Log on to Network check box is not selected. You should also clear the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX Compatible check boxes.

>Good tip - but there is at least one exception worth noting. If you use a DUN connection to attach to a remote network via a RAS service, you may need to leave the other protocols in place - for example, if I RAS into my NT Server at work and want to access files on the NetWare servers across the WAN connection (not using remote control like PC Anywhere, where I run on the remote station, but where the remote station provides a gateway to the network) I need IPX/SPX to be enabled for the connection, so that I can talk to the NetWare servers...
