To you mean read a barcode as input from a VFP app? It's largely dependent on the type of barcode reader being used, but it's not difficult.

If you use a wedge-type barcode reader, then the input from reading the barcode comes in as if typed on the keyboard. This is my p[referred mechanism for reading barcodes - no special drivers or software needed. It does tie the reader to the PC to some extent.

There are portable barcode readers incorporated into CE and other portable machines that can save whatever is read to a file or write the to a network file if attached to a wireless network of some sort. This is how we use barcode readers in our warehouse, but the VFP app is not run on the portable reader - it takes the file created by the portable reader and handles it the same way it does any other textfile. At present at least, VFP doesn't run on the CE platform.

Serial barcode readers are available; generally, they need some sort of driver ( a .DLL or ActiveX control typically) to incorporate into your application, in much the same way that a modem, scanner or other serial input device is controlled from an app.) The barcode reader vendor usually includes the needed driver, or will at least describe how the equipment works in enough detail so that a common serial product liek CommTools or the MSCOMM32 control can be used for communications.
