I think it is just the Internet Backbones in general... as millions of people joing the internet every month, and also thousands of people upgrade to DLS/ISDN/CABLE the demand on the backbones is just heavier and heavier...

Also, I think the name servers are really bogged down... of course, you will only notice that the first time you go to a site for the day... the browsers caches the IP after that.
