This is a problem I have just experienced. The solution I came up with was to create a new ActiveX date selection control (extreme I know), the Microsoft common datetime control has no concept of handling empty dates in data or visually.

If the visual thing is not a problem then just monitor the Change() event and copy the date back into the field. I am sure we are not the only people to experience this.
