thanks - but I finally found it. My query is actually on a Back-end view and it turns out the BE table name I was using in the UpdateNameList was the name of the table, not the view. In short, the error message I was getting had nothing to do with what (really) the problem was. A message more along the lines of "table name(s) specified in UpdateNameList do not match any tables in the 'Tables' property" would make more sense. Telling me that "no update tables are specified" was both inaccurate and very misleading.
